Scholarship Winners

2001 

Each year, it is the intent of the national Association of Purchasing Management, Finger Lakes Region, to provide three $1,000.00 Academic Scholarships to our local communities institutes of higher learning, specifically Corning Community College, Elmira College and a dependant of an NAPM member. The criteria for the scholarship is: the student must be enrolled as a full time, Business Major, Minimum Grade point Average of 3.0. The students must write an essay on their understanding of, and interest in purchasing as a career.

The NAPM organization is proud to award two Elmira College and one Corning Community College students a $1,000.00 scholarship each. The scholarships were awarded at the monthly dinner meeting March 8th, 2001  at the National Warplane Museum.

2001 Scholarship winners are:

Leah Malliris is a senior at Elmira College whose dual major is International Business and Business Administration. Leah is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and Sigma Beta Delta. She has been active in many student activities, including Students Offering Assistance in Reading. She has held a position, as an intern, which has exposed her not only to purchasing in general, but also to the "challenges in dealing with international suppliers and worldwide regulations."

Melanie Gilbert is also a senior at Elmira College whose course of studies is Business Management and Marketing. Melanie is a student on the EC Finance Board and is in SIFE along with other college activities and has communication skills that will serve her well in the business world. Melanie applied her knowledge about purchasing when she completed an internship at Hale Koa Hotel where she selected the hotel Christmas gift for guests, sponsors and employees.

Tracy Stephens is a sophomore and transfer student at Corning Community College. She is on CCC’s Dean’s list for this past semester. She plans to transfer to SUNY Geneseo to continue her college career. Her experience in the business world and purchasing has been in the form of an internship, also. After working as an expeditor in a furniture factory, Tracy has a solid understanding of the importance of purchasing in aiding a business in its efforts to become more efficient in cost saving, quality management and profit forecasting techniques.
