Scholarship Winners

2002

By Peggy Chalk, C.P.M., A.P.P.

The Scholarship Committee members have selected a strong slate of three recipients for the annual National Association of Purchasing Management, Finger Lakes Region Scholarship Award. There were a total of seven applications, however, due to student circumstances, only four were interviewed to determine finalists. Students presented themselves as motivated and having high ethics to qualifying for this award. This made our task of selecting only three, a formidable challenge. We did meet that challenge and have proudly notified David Olsson, Janet Farrar and Adam Ferguson that they are each the winners of a $1,000.00 scholarship each from our NAPM affiliate.

David Olsson is a Senior at Elmira College whose dual major is International Business and Management. David is an Academic Member of NAPMFLR and a member of Students in free Enterprise (SIFE) at Elmira College. He is active in many student activities, including varsity soccer, varsity tennis, and a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Board. His position as an intern with Teleflex (TFX Scandinavia), has exposed him to the importance of purchasing in general. During his internship, David was invaluable in compiling data, which added leverage to negotiations to successfully lower freight costs for Teleflex.

Adam Ferguson is also a Senior at Elmira College. He is studying International Business and Economics. Adam is active as a Student Senator; a member of the Spanish Club, Gold Key Club and Men’s Soccer Team as well as other sport’s clubs. Adam has worked in the business world for many years and his essay shows insight to the purchasing career.

Janet Farrar is a Junior at Elmira College whose course of studies is Business Management and Marketing. Janet is an Academic Member of NAPMFLR. She is Treasurer of the Student Activities Board, Treasurer of the Outing club, a member of SIFE at Elmira College. Janet’s essay clearly indicated her understanding of the importance of purchasing in a company. She would like to apply her knowledge of purchasing by serving as an intern buyer for TJX Companies, Inc. in her senior year.

As these short "bios" testify, we believe we have three commendable people who will be taking a big step into a business career aided by our affiliate’s scholarship.  Thank you for sustaining our efforts by supporting the annual Buy-Sell picnic. Thank you, also, to my fellow committee members, Tony Maio, Deb Mason and Marge Cunningham for their valuable time and input.

  Congratulations to All!
